向（向こう、向かう）

The letter "向" has several different meaning.

1. face to face

I sat face to face with her. 私は彼女と向かい合って座った

2. accross the street

A famous writer lives accross the street from us. 有名な作家が我が家の向かいに住んでいる。

3. direction, toward

We started walking toward the castle. 私たちはその城に向かって歩き出した

On this usage, the destination place is important. 「Aに向かって」 A is the destination.

4. somewhere far from here

Go away!  向こうへ行け！

On this usage, the destination place is not important.

「向こう」 means "not here, anywhere far from here"
